Why do candles burn down the middle? When this happens it's known as 'Tunnelling'. This is when only the wax around the wick melts and burns down. This is usually caused by the timing of first burn of the candle. Your candle should be left on long enough for the melted wax to reach the sides of the jar.

Is it okay to let a candle burn itself off?Ideally a candle shouldn't be left to burn itself out. A candle should only be burned for a maximum of 3-4 hours a one time. As it gets nearer the end of the candle, it should be extinguished when it has 1cm of wax remaining at the base. This will prevent the glass becoming too hot and possibly cracking.
